I dropped by G!RO’s Gravel Fest this weekend, and wow, the gravel scene is buzzing. There’s a whole vibe that goes beyond road cycling—it’s all about inclusivity, adventure, and best of all, no traffic or road rage! Sure, dog walkers might be surprised by a sudden group of gravelleurs, but at least they won’t run you off the road. Plus, gravel riders seem more courteous, calling out and slowing down—long may that continue!
Road cycling isn’t dead—it’s just evolving. I see it splitting in two: the performance-driven lycra crowd, and the casual riders, those commuting or riding for fun with zero peloton etiquette or Strava obsession. It’s like cycling in Amsterdam for the first time — peloton skills won’t help you! The days of riding alongside legends like Roche or Armstrong at events are fading, much like Premier League stars aren’t playing 5-a-side with us anymore.
I’m loving the gravel vibe right now, but I’m just as excited to see where road cycling goes next. A new era is coming..
